Deanne Heron gives a reading of Sink or Swim from her collection of poems - Contemplation.
I was given this book as a gift and I so enjoyed reading this book that I bought the second Volume to read straight after.
As a child of Jamaican parents who came here in the fifties I could identify with the characters and see them in my house or theirs! Great writing with so much humour even in the serious bits.
Well recommended! Read this and then Volume 2
I loved this book. Laugh out loud humourous take on real issues in the loves and lives of families. Read this book in one sitting. Couldn't put it down once I started.
There is so much more than Jamaican humour (which itself is no small thing!) in this collection of short stories that reads like a novel.
You don't have to be Jamaican, black or an immigrant to appreciate the real issues behind the humour.
I found this book to be full of stories that anyone especially of Caribbean background can relate to.
It was funny and we all can find that family member who just makes us laugh or at time cringe.
A great read.
Good collection of short stories that bought back some exciting memories. Easy to read and follow. The Jamaican patois was easy to follow.
Would definitely recommend.
Anyone who wants a quick and amusing look into the world of an UK based Jamaican family must read this
Some of the stories I can relate too. The ending was quite abrupt, which left me wanting more. I hope there is a second book, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Well done Deanne.
This book will absorb you from cover to cover. A truly wonderful read and uncannily accurate insight into Caribbean/Black British culture.
Excellent book if you were born in the UK of West Indian parents. Brought back memories of loud discussions and family togetherness, West Indian style.
